The incident occurred on 12 November 1978 near Acadie Siding, in the Rogersville area of New Brunswick. According to the RCMP file, Mrs Edmond Robichaud and her children, Larry and Sandra, observed a distant circular light displaying alternating red and bluish-green colours. What CFB Chatham confirmed and ruled out

The most valuable feature of the Acadie Siding file is that the RCMP did not stop after recording the witness statements. Officers contacted CFB Chatham to determine whether military flying activity might explain what had been seen.

The base confirmed that one military aircraft had been operating in the general area during the relevant period. This meant investigators did not dismiss the aviation explanation out of hand. Instead, they compared the reported observations with known aircraft activity. Why the aircraft explanation is plausible but incomplete

Several aspects of the witnesses’ description are compatible with an aircraft observed at night:

  • Red and green navigation lights are standard aircraft lighting.
  • Apparent side-to-side movement can result from changes in heading relative to the observer.
  • Estimating the range of a single light in darkness is notoriously unreliable.

At the same time, several features prevented investigators from treating the matter as completely resolved:

  • The witnesses described behaviour extending beyond the aircraft’s confirmed presence.
  • The object reportedly ended the observation looking like a fixed star.
  • No evidence demonstrated precisely when, or if, the observers changed from watching one object to another.

Why the case remains unresolved

The Acadie Siding file illustrates both the strengths and the limitations of Canada’s official UFO reporting system in the late 1970s.

The strengths are evident. Police identified named witnesses, recorded the reported appearance and behaviour of the light, and checked with a nearby military installation instead of relying on speculation.
