What Really Happened in Alberta's UFO History?
Alberta’s UFO history is not dominated by a single dramatic encounter. Its strongest material is a mixture of one genuinely puzzling physical-trace case, recurring reports of unusual lights, aviation and police records, and a distinctive piece of civic folklore: St Paul’s UFO Landing Pad.

Introduction

Why Alberta produces so many reports
Alberta offers unusually good conditions for noticing objects in the sky. Large areas have open horizons, settlements and highways are separated by long dark stretches, and many residents work outdoors or travel at night. The province also contains busy civil air routes, airports, military flying areas, energy infrastructure and an expanding population around Calgary and Edmonton. These factors create both more opportunities to notice the sky and more potential sources of misidentification.
Report totals therefore need careful interpretation. Canadian UFO researcher Chris Rutkowski estimated that Alberta generated roughly 150 reports in 2020 and about 75 in 2021. He has also stressed that provincial totals generally track population and public attention rather than demonstrating a geographical “hotspot”. Nor are private UFO databases complete censuses. Canada has no single long-running system into which every witness, police force, pilot, air-traffic controller and federal department submits observations. Duhamel: Alberta’s landmark unresolved case
On 5 August 1967, farmer Edgar Schielke found circular impressions in pastureland near Duhamel, south-east of Edmonton and close to Camrose. He had not visited that part of the property for some time, so the exact date on which the marks appeared was unknown. Local interest grew quickly after a neighbour interpreted the first ring as evidence of a flying saucer. The timing encouraged a UFO interpretation. People in the area had recently told relatives and a local newspaper about unusual objects, including an account from two schoolgirls who described a pale object moving near the ground. The Defence Research Board scientist who later reviewed that testimony was unimpressed, observing that its description resembled widely published saucer stories. After the Camrose Canadian publicised the discovery, Canadian Forces Headquarters ordered an investigation. A team reached the field on 11 August. Its members included G. H. S. Jones of the Defence Research Establishment Suffield, a military research facility in southern Alberta, and Captain Walker of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. What investigators actually found
The investigators eventually recorded six separate rings measuring roughly 31 to 36 feet across. They were not neat, complete circles of flattened crop in the later British crop-circle style. They were narrow, incomplete tracks pressed into the ground, with tread-like or lug-like details. Jones thought they resembled marks made by a rolling wheel, although there was no continuous track leading into or out of the circles. The scene had serious evidential weaknesses. Heavy rain had fallen, the discovery date was uncertain, and numerous visitors had driven or walked through the pasture before the official inspection. Samples had already been taken by private enthusiasts. Jones considered a hoax but found no direct evidence for one. He also made a rough pressure calculation suggesting that an extremely heavy object would have been required to produce the impressions exactly as he interpreted them. This estimate later became the source of claims that the marks implied a craft weighing about 135 tons. It was not a measurement of a landed object, however, and it depended on assumptions about the soil, contact area and mechanism that created the tracks. Radiation readings at the field were normal. Soil was sent to the University of Alberta for examination, partly because radioactive material had complicated the separate Falcon Lake investigation in Manitoba earlier that year. Gamma-ray analysis of the Duhamel samples found ordinary background levels, and no foreign substance or physical remnant tied the rings to a vehicle. How strong is the case?
Duhamel deserves its place in Canadian UFO history because real marks were documented by named government investigators, not simply remembered decades later. The case is therefore stronger than a story based only on a distant light or a late witness recollection.
It remains weak as evidence of an extraordinary craft. Nobody saw the rings being formed; the field was compromised before inspection; the nearby UFO stories were vague and uncorroborated; no unusual radiation or material was detected; and the investigators could not exclude an unconventional mechanical cause or a hoax. The fairest verdict is unresolved physical traces of unknown origin, not a confirmed UFO landing. What official records do — and do not — prove
Canada’s historical UFO files are more extensive than many readers realise. Library and Archives Canada holds about 9,500 digitised documents accumulated from 1947 into the early 1980s. They came from the Department of National Defence, Department of Transport, National Research Council and Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and include sighting forms, correspondence, memoranda and investigative reports. The existence of a government document does not show that officials accepted an extraterrestrial explanation. Reports were collected for several practical reasons: possible aircraft accidents, airspace incursions, national security, public safety, meteor research and the need to respond to citizens. Investigators often recorded what witnesses said without endorsing it. Modern aviation records require the same caution. Transport Canada’s Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System, known as CADORS, collects preliminary information about events affecting Canadian aircraft, airports and airspace. A CADORS entry may use “UFO” for an unidentified object, but Transport Canada explicitly notes that this can include drones, balloons, meteors, birds and weather phenomena. Alberta’s military aviation environment is nevertheless relevant. Royal Canadian Air Force activity around Cold Lake, weapons-training airspace and frequent civil and military flights increase the range of unfamiliar lights, formations and manoeuvres that residents may encounter. They also mean that a genuinely unidentified object near restricted airspace can be an aviation concern even when there is no reason to invoke extraterrestrial technology. “Unidentified” is a description of the observer’s information at that moment, not a conclusion about origin.
When a striking UFO becomes an ordinary object
A useful Alberta example occurred on 21 September 2013 near Manning. An RCMP patrol-car camera recorded a brilliant object crossing the northern sky. Detached from its context, the short recording circulated readily as dramatic “UFO” footage. The Manning recording illustrates why photographs and video do not automatically settle a case. A camera can confirm that something appeared, but a single viewpoint rarely supplies reliable distance, size or speed. A nearby slow object and a distant fast object may produce similar angular movement. Bright meteors can appear surprisingly low, fragment, change intensity or briefly illuminate cloud, while camera exposure and compression can alter their apparent shape.
Other recurring Alberta explanations include:
- Aircraft seen head-on, whose landing lights can appear almost stationary before the viewing angle changes.
- Satellites and satellite trains, especially soon after launch, moving silently in straight lines.
- Venus, Jupiter and bright stars, which can seem to move because of cloud motion, atmospheric distortion or the observer’s own movement.
- Meteors and re-entering space debris, producing bright streaks, fragmentation or multiple lights.
- Drones and balloons, which may hover, drift or carry lights unfamiliar to a distant observer.
- Aurora, ice crystals and cloud effects, which can produce pillars, arcs, reflections or apparently structured patches of light.
These explanations do not prove that every report is mundane. They show why investigators need time, direction, duration, weather, astronomical data, aircraft tracks and independent witnesses before treating a sighting as genuinely anomalous. St Paul’s landing pad: folklore rather than evidence
Alberta’s best-known UFO landmark is not an alleged crash site but a municipal attraction. In 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, the town of St Paul built what it promoted as the world’s first UFO Landing Pad. The project was conceived as an imaginative landmark and tourism initiative, combining the era’s fascination with space travel with a message of international welcome. The landing pad is important to Alberta’s UFO history because it shows how quickly the subject moved beyond witness reports and government files into popular culture. It was opened in the same year as the Duhamel investigation, during a period of intense media interest in flying saucers across Canada. Yet it should not be treated as proof that St Paul experienced an exceptional concentration of unexplained events. Its historical significance lies in civic humour, centennial optimism and successful place-making.
Over time, the attraction has helped make north-eastern Alberta part of Canada’s public UFO geography. That cultural legacy can coexist with scepticism: a visitor can appreciate the site without accepting that extraterrestrial craft have landed there.
How Alberta’s cases should be judged
The most useful way to read Alberta’s UFO record is to separate cases into three broad evidential classes.
Plausibly explained reports include incidents such as the Manning fireball, where imagery, timing and expert interpretation point to a known phenomenon. These cases matter because they demonstrate how convincing an ordinary object can look before adequate contextual information is available.
Weak or indeterminate reports make up much of the historical and modern record. They may be sincere accounts of lights or shapes but lack accurate times, directions, durations, corroborating witnesses or original photographs. Such reports often remain labelled “unknown” because there is too little information to test an explanation.
Unresolved investigated cases are rarer. Duhamel belongs here because physical marks were measured and officially examined, yet no cause was established. Its unresolved status is meaningful, but limited: it records the failure to identify the maker of the impressions, not the successful identification of a spacecraft.
This distinction also guards against two opposite errors. Dismissing every witness as mistaken ignores the value of reporting possible aviation hazards and unusual natural events. Treating every unexplained entry as evidence of alien activity confuses missing information with positive evidence. Alberta’s importance comes from the variety of its record rather than the certainty of its mysteries. Duhamel provides one of Canada’s better-documented physical-trace investigations. Federal archives preserve reports from the province within the broader history of RCAF, defence, transport and RCMP interest. Modern aviation systems continue to record unidentified objects when they may affect safety. St Paul demonstrates how the flying-saucer idea became part of local culture, while cases such as the Manning fireball show how rapidly an apparent mystery can be resolved.
The available evidence does not establish extraterrestrial visitation in Alberta. It does establish that residents, pilots and police have repeatedly encountered objects they could not immediately identify; that Canadian agencies sometimes documented or investigated those reports; and that a small number remain unresolved after the available evidence has been exhausted. In Alberta, “unresolved” is most often a statement about the limits of observation and record-keeping — not a hidden answer waiting inside the word “UFO”.
