  • a brilliant light low in the south-western evening sky;
  • an object appearing close to the treeline rather than high overhead;
  • colours shifting between white, blue, red and green;
  • repeated observations over several consecutive evenings rather than a single isolated event.

Those shared characteristics are significant because they describe the sort of observation that astronomers frequently associate with a bright planet viewed through a long column of turbulent atmosphere near the horizon. When a bright object is low in the sky, atmospheric refraction and turbulence can produce rapid flashes of different colours while making the object appear to shimmer or dance slightly. Why Venus fits the long, stationary reports

The Venus explanation is strongest for witnesses who described a bright object remaining visible for an extended period before slowly descending towards the horizon.

One of the most important details in the historical record is that some accounts—including statements attributed to Fort Resolution’s mayor—described the light remaining visible for several hours before gradually setting. That behaviour closely matches the apparent motion of Venus as Earth rotates. The reported colour changes also favour this interpretation. Venus is often mistaken for something unusual because it is by far the brightest planet visible from Earth. Near the horizon its light passes through thicker layers of atmosphere, producing rapid scintillation that can alternate between white, red, blue and green. To observers unfamiliar with the effect, those flashes can resemble an object actively changing colour. This is a well-understood optical phenomenon rather than evidence that the object itself is emitting multiple colours.

Another point in favour of the Venus theory is the absence of independent evidence for an aircraft or structured object. Canadian Forces personnel travelled from Yellowknife to investigate, but poor weather prevented direct observation. The available video reportedly showed only a bright point of light without foreground references, making it impossible to distinguish genuine movement from camera shake. Which details remain difficult to reconcile

The Venus explanation is persuasive for the longest and most stationary observations, but it does not neatly account for every version of the story.

Some witnesses reported the light remaining visible for only one to six minutes before apparently accelerating straight upwards. Why the Venus theory remains the leading explanation

Taken as a whole, the evidence favours a mixed interpretation rather than a simple choice between “planet” and “spaceship”.

The strongest evidence for Venus includes the repeated appearance in the same part of the south-western sky, the extended duration reported by some witnesses, the gradual descent towards the horizon, and the characteristic colour changes expected from atmospheric scintillation.
