Introduction
The Hotel Bonaventure sighting of 7 November 1990 is Quebec’s best-known UFO case because the lights remained visible for hours and were observed not only by hotel guests but also by staff, police officers and journalists. Contemporary photographs were taken, aviation authorities were contacted, and investigators later assembled witness drawings, weather information and police accounts. That combination makes the incident better documented than a typical brief sighting.
Its strongest evidence, however, supports a prolonged unidentified luminous phenomenon, not a proven enormous craft. The photographs show diffuse light in cloud rather than a sharply defined machine. Radar reportedly showed no matching target, but that is negative evidence and cannot establish what produced the lights. Estimates of a craft hundreds of metres wide depended on uncertain assumptions about altitude and distance. What witnesses reported on 7 November 1990
The sighting began at about 7 p.m. near the rooftop swimming pool of the Hotel Bonaventure, then in the Hilton chain, at 900 De La Gauchetière Street in central Montreal. Early witnesses described several coloured or amber lights overhead. As more people gathered, accounts developed into a formation of roughly eight to ten lights, sometimes said to form an oval or ring, with brighter illumination or pale beams near its centre. The duration is central to the case’s reputation. Witnesses had time to call hotel security, bring other observers outside and contact the police. Journalists from La Presse reached the roof while lights were still visible, so the story was not reconstructed solely from memories gathered days later. Police officers from the Montreal Urban Community Police and an RCMP officer also recorded observations. Yet the testimony was not uniform. Some people spoke simply of lights; others perceived an oval body linking them. Witnesses disagreed over whether the phenomenon was stationary, rose from near the horizon, moved from south to north, shifted across the pool or travelled east. Pool supervisor Line Saint-Pierre was quoted as saying that it appeared overhead wherever she stood and did not move, whereas security employee Albert Sterling gave accounts suggesting a gradual change in position. That distinction matters. Several people can accurately witness the same lights while interpreting their depth, distance and physical arrangement differently. In darkness, especially when light is diffused by cloud, the eye has few reference points with which to decide whether separate luminous areas belong to one solid body. The evidence is therefore strong that a striking display occurred, but weaker on the claim that witnesses saw the surface or outline of a gigantic vehicle.
What radar, photographs and police accounts actually show
The photographs confirm light, not a craft
La Presse photographer Marcel Laroche took colour photographs while the phenomenon was visible. These are among the case’s most valuable surviving records because they establish that the observation was not merely a story passed between witnesses. The images show a bright, diffuse patch against a dark, cloudy sky, with fainter luminous effects around it. Richard F. Haines and Quebec investigator Bernard Guénette examined the negatives in a report prepared after the event. They argued that subtle brightness differences indicated a broad oval form around the brightest area. Their analysis also acknowledged that some radial streaks in the photograph were lens flare caused by internal reflections in the camera. The report tried to compare the apparent photographic width with witness estimates and drawings. That work gave the case an unusual degree of technical treatment, but it could not solve the fundamental distance problem. A photograph of an angular patch in the sky cannot reveal its true diameter unless its range is independently known. A small light effect relatively close to the observer and a vast object much farther away can occupy the same angle in a photograph.
This is why widely repeated size estimates—roughly 300 to 500 metres, or several football pitches—should not be treated as measurements. They were calculations based on assumed altitude and visual angle. If the lights were in or projected upon a lower cloud layer, rather than attached to an object thousands of metres above the hotel, the calculated dimensions would collapse. The radar result is important but often overstated
Police contacted air-traffic control at Dorval airport, and accounts also refer to checks with Mirabel and a military radar facility. The controller reportedly said that nothing unusual appeared on radar and suggested that the sight might be a play of lights. The absence of an unidentified radar target weakens straightforward explanations involving a very large conventional aircraft or advertising airship occupying the claimed position. Such an object, if several hundred metres wide and flying within controlled airspace, would be expected to create broader operational concern.
But “nothing on radar” does not prove a craft with extraordinary radar-evading properties. Radar detects physical targets under particular conditions; it does not normally identify reflections, ice-crystal displays or illumination on cloud. Even for aircraft, detection depends on range, altitude, coverage, radar configuration and whether investigators preserved the underlying records. No radar plot showing the phenomenon survives in the public case file, and the negative result is known largely through police and witness accounts rather than a complete technical analysis by air-traffic authorities.
Some later retellings say that a cargo aircraft passed below the phenomenon and supplied a basis for estimating its altitude and size. That claim is much less secure than it sounds. Unless the aircraft and the lights were observed along precisely the same line of sight, with their positions and ranges measured, apparent overlap could not establish that one was physically below the other. Police involvement strengthens the chronology, not the extraordinary interpretation
Police records matter because officers were present while the event was happening, contacted aviation personnel and wrote down observations. Their involvement makes fabrication by the original hotel witnesses highly unlikely. It also establishes that the phenomenon was sufficiently persistent and unusual to prompt a real-time response.
Police testimony does not carry special expertise in identifying distant atmospheric optics, however. Officers reported what they saw: luminous shapes, lights and possible beams. Their accounts contain the same uncertainties about movement, altitude and structure found in civilian testimony. Claims that military aircraft, NASA or several federal bodies conducted a major coordinated investigation should also be treated cautiously. Why cloud and city light remain serious explanations
Weather observations used by Haines and Guénette indicate freezing or near-freezing conditions, with layered cloud lowering and thickening during the sighting. The reported cloud base fell from roughly 1,600 metres earlier in the evening to close to 1,000 metres, and light snow began at Dorval shortly after the phenomenon disappeared. These conditions make an optical explanation plausible. Powerful urban lights can illuminate cloud from below, while horizontally oriented ice crystals can create vertical pillars or patches of reflected light. Light pillars are not physical beams extending through space; they are apparent columns produced when numerous flat ice crystals reflect a light source towards the observer. A construction-light explanation was considered on the night. Contemporary and later accounts say that lights associated with the nearby 1000 De La Gauchetière building site, or other downtown spotlights, were switched off without making the whole display vanish. That is evidence against a simple claim that one obvious spotlight directly produced every visible feature. The restricted viewing geometry also raises doubts about a huge high-altitude craft. Sceptical Quebec commentators noted the relative lack of simultaneous reports from the many other buildings and neighbourhoods that should have had a clear view of a luminous object hundreds of metres across. No single atmospheric reconstruction has been demonstrated beyond doubt. Investigators did not map every relevant ground light, obtain simultaneous photographs from separated locations or measure the ice-crystal layer directly above the hotel. “Light pillars” therefore remains a plausible explanation rather than a conclusive solution. It fits the cold, cloud, diffuse photographs, absent radar target and uncertain apparent movement better than the claim of a clearly observed solid machine, but the missing measurements prevent a definitive replay of the event.
Why the case remains unresolved but evidentially limited
The Bonaventure incident deserves its place in Quebec’s UFO history because it has several genuine strengths:
- the observation lasted for roughly three hours rather than a few seconds;
- numerous people watched it, including police and working journalists;
- photographs were taken while the lights were present;
- aviation authorities were contacted during the event;

Those strengths establish a real and unusual sighting. They also sharply reduce the likelihood of a deliberate hoax staged only for one witness. They do not establish the stronger proposition that an enormous structured craft hovered above central Montreal.
The decisive evidence that would support that proposition is absent. There is no photograph showing an unambiguous solid outline, no radar return corresponding to the lights, no independently measured altitude, no triangulation from separated observers, no recorded acceleration or flight path, and no physical trace. Witness estimates of immense size were generated only after treating apparent angular width as the width of a distant object. Later reporting has preserved the story but has not materially strengthened its evidential foundation. The most defensible conclusion is therefore narrow. On 7 November 1990, many credible witnesses observed persistent, unusual lights through cloud above or apparently above the Hotel Bonaventure. Police and journalists confirmed the display, and the source was not identified at the time. The surviving evidence does not confirm a huge craft. It leaves an unresolved luminous event for which an atmospheric reflection involving city lights and ice-bearing cloud remains a credible, though unproven, explanation.
