What contradictions can and cannot prove
Differences between early and late testimony deserve careful attention, but they should not be treated as automatic evidence either for fraud or for authenticity.
Contradictions may arise for several reasons:
- normal changes in human memory over long periods;
- misunderstandings during interviews;
- editing for publication;
- genuine corrections after new documents emerge;
- deliberate embellishment by some witnesses.
The archive therefore supports careful comparison rather than simple verdicts. If an early letter omits dramatic claims that appear only decades later, researchers may reasonably question why those details were absent originally. Equally, the absence of certain information in an early account does not necessarily prove that a witness fabricated later memories, especially if the interviewer initially focused on different questions.
Likewise, strong consistency across independent documents does not prove that an extraordinary event occurred. It demonstrates that testimony remained comparatively stable, which is only one element in assessing historical evidence. Physical evidence, official records, radar data, photographs and contemporary documentation still require separate evaluation.
