Introduction
Alberta’s periodic surges in UFO reports are best understood as waves of observation and reporting, not evidence that unusual craft suddenly favour the province. Alberta gives people many chances to notice the sky: broad prairie horizons, dark rural roads, outdoor work, long journeys between communities and rapidly growing cities whose residents can reach comparatively dark surroundings quickly. At the same time, aircraft, satellites, meteors, planets, balloons and atmospheric effects provide a steady supply of unfamiliar-looking lights.
Report numbers rise most sharply when those physical conditions combine with public attention. A conspicuous event, news story or social-media post encourages more people to look upwards, compare experiences and submit observations that might otherwise have been ignored. Open skies and night-time observation
Alberta’s landscape does not necessarily generate more unexplained objects, but it often makes ordinary objects easier to see. Away from Calgary, Edmonton and other urban centres, observers can have long, relatively unobstructed views towards the horizon. A bright object that would be hidden by buildings, trees or haze elsewhere may remain visible for several minutes above open prairie.
Darkness also changes how people judge what they see. With few nearby reference points, it is difficult to estimate an object’s altitude, distance, speed or size. A stationary planet can appear to follow a moving vehicle; an aircraft travelling towards an observer can seem motionless before apparently changing direction; and a distant light may appear to dart because of involuntary eye movement or turbulence in the atmosphere. These are limitations of unaided observation, not evidence that witnesses are dishonest.
Alberta’s dark-sky areas demonstrate how far visibility can improve once artificial lighting is reduced. Alberta Parks describes dark-sky preserves as places where artificial light is deliberately kept to a minimum, while material from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada shows that Edmonton’s glow can obscure stars even from roughly 150 kilometres away. Roads, shift work and repeated exposure
Many Alberta observations occur during ordinary night travel rather than planned astronomical watching. Drivers, oil and gas workers, agricultural workers, police officers and other people working irregular hours may spend long periods beneath open skies. The conditions are especially favourable for noticing lights near the horizon, where atmospheric distortion is strongest and where aircraft landing lights can remain visible from great distances.
A recent Alberta fireball provides a useful example of how observation conditions create clusters. In February 2026, people across the province reported a brilliant object shortly before dawn, including motorists travelling to work around Calgary. This distinction matters when reading UFO databases. Ten reports from neighbouring communities on one evening may represent ten separate mysteries, but they may equally be ten descriptions of one meteor, satellite passage or aircraft operation. A dramatic multi-witness cluster can therefore be better explained than a solitary report if its time and direction can be matched against astronomical or aviation records.
New objects create new reporting waves
The sky itself has become busier. Commercial aviation, remotely piloted aircraft, high-altitude balloons and satellites all add objects whose appearance may be unfamiliar. The most important recent change has been the deployment of large satellite constellations.
Shortly after launch, Starlink satellites can appear as a neat procession of evenly spaced lights. They are normally most visible after sunset or before sunrise, when the satellites remain illuminated by the Sun while observers on the ground are in darkness. Satellite misidentification is not confined to inexperienced members of the public. A detailed aviation study reconstructed reports from five pilots aboard two commercial flights and found that a recently launched Starlink group could reproduce the unfamiliar lights they had observed. Other technical work has shown that reflected sunlight can make individual Starlink satellites flare brightly enough to produce further UAP reports.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
For Alberta, this means that modern report totals are not directly comparable with those from the 1960s or 1970s. An observer now sees a different artificial sky. A rise in reports may reflect a new class of visible object rather than a change in whatever proportion remains genuinely unidentified.
Population growth and public attention
Alberta’s population has expanded substantially, particularly around Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary’s city population reached 1,306,780 in the 2021 census, an increase of 5.5 per cent since 2016. The wider Calgary and Edmonton metropolitan areas also grew faster than the Canadian average during that period. Growth also extends the zone where urban life meets darker countryside. New suburbs, ring roads and commuter communities place large numbers of people near open land while keeping them connected to local news and social media. A strange light seen outside Airdrie, Leduc, Cochrane or Sherwood Park can be photographed, posted and discussed across the province within minutes.
This produces an important statistical effect: a larger raw total does not necessarily mean that an individual Albertan has become more likely to see something genuinely unexplained. The increase may simply reflect population growth, better communications and easier access to reporting channels. Provincial figures should ideally be compared per head of population and adjusted for changes in data collection, but Canadian UFO surveys are not based on a stable, compulsory reporting system.
The pandemic-era surge
The jump in 2020 is the clearest recent Alberta example. Researcher Chris Rutkowski estimated that the province produced about 150 reports that year, followed by roughly 75 in 2021. Several plausible influences overlapped:
- people spent more time at home, walking locally or looking for outdoor activities;
- quieter routines may have made the night sky more noticeable;
- news coverage invited witnesses to reinterpret or report earlier observations;
- Starlink launches introduced striking formations of lights;
- online reporting made it easier to submit a case without contacting police, aviation authorities or a local investigator.
A broader study of UFO databases confirmed that reports increased significantly in 2020, but found little support for simple explanations based on lockdown severity or other individual pandemic measures. Its authors identified the arrival of Starlink as an important complication. How attention turns sightings into waves
A sighting wave, traditionally called a “flap”, can begin when one conspicuous incident receives publicity. Readers who would normally dismiss a light as an aircraft become more alert to similar stimuli. Others learn where reports can be filed. Older experiences may also be submitted during the same period, making the apparent wave partly a wave of retrospective reporting rather than simultaneous events.
This does not mean witnesses are copying stories or fabricating observations. Public attention changes what people notice, how they classify it and whether they consider it worth reporting. A bright light seen before a news story might be remembered as “probably a plane”; the same light seen during intense UFO coverage may be watched longer, filmed and labelled unidentified.
Alberta’s RCMP dispatchers have described receiving UFO-related calls ranging from sincere concern about lights to situations in which staff first had to establish whether a caller was actually facing a burglary or other immediate danger. Media coverage can also improve identification. When multiple Albertans report a fireball or a line of satellite lights, journalists can quickly consult astronomers and compare videos from different locations. Publicity therefore has two opposing effects: it may generate additional reports, but it can also provide enough shared information to resolve the event.
Why totals rise and fall so sharply
Annual numbers are shaped by several overlapping variables rather than one underlying “UFO rate”.
Visibility changes. Clear weather, seasonal hours of darkness and major astronomical events influence how many people are outside and what they can see.
The object population changes. Satellite launches, balloon operations, drone use and busy air routes introduce new or more frequent lights.
Attention changes. Films, government hearings, military incidents and prominent local stories can make the subject feel more legitimate or urgent.
Reporting access changes. A widely promoted website or investigator may collect cases that would previously have remained private.
Database coverage changes. Researchers may add records from social media, police files or other organisations in one year but not another.
The Canadian UFO Survey itself assembles material from participating researchers, existing databases, websites, social media and other online sources. The latest national figures continue to show Alberta contributing a sizeable but population-consistent share. The 2025 Canadian UFO Survey recorded 1,052 reports nationally, with Alberta accounting for about 11 per cent. What report totals can and cannot show
Report totals can reveal when public observation intensified, where witnesses were concentrated and which descriptions were common. A sudden set of near-identical reports may help investigators identify a shared stimulus. Long-term records can also show when new technologies, such as satellite constellations, begin appearing repeatedly in witness accounts.
They cannot by themselves establish that unexplained aerial activity increased. Canada has no single official organisation that systematically receives every public UAP report. The federal Sky Canada Project found that existing information is dispersed among government departments, aviation systems, police organisations and private groups. A survey commissioned for Sky Canada found that one quarter of respondents said they had seen a UAP at some point, yet only 10 per cent of those witnesses had reported it; 40 per cent said they would not know where to submit a report. Historical archives have comparable gaps. Library and Archives Canada notes that only about half of the UFO-related documents in its collections identify a specific sighting location. Dates may refer either to an observation or to the later creation of a document, and some records are undated. How to read an Alberta sighting wave
The most useful question is not simply, “How many reports were there?” It is, “What changed during the period?”
A convincing analysis should ask whether reports:
- occurred at closely matching times and viewing directions;
- described one common object or many unrelated ones;
- followed a satellite launch, meteor, balloon event or unusual aviation activity;
- rose after prominent news coverage or a widely shared post;
- were submitted promptly or collected retrospectively;
- contained photographs, precise locations and duration estimates;
- remained unexplained after astronomical, meteorological and aviation checks.
A wave dominated by brief reports of evenly spaced moving lights is very different from a wave containing independent observations with reliable timings, radar information or physical evidence. Both may produce the same headline total, but they carry very different evidential weight.
Alberta’s open skies, road travel and growing population explain why the province repeatedly produces noticeable clusters. Publicity and changing technology explain why those clusters can rise abruptly and fade just as quickly. None of this proves that every report is ordinary. It does show why a high count, by itself, is weak evidence for anything extraordinary: the number records human opportunities, attention and reporting behaviour as much as it records objects in the sky.
