The sergeant’s pre-dawn account

The publicly available description is brief. Shortly before dawn, on 7 November 1967, a sergeant at CFB Moose Jaw reported seeing an exceptionally bright light estimated to be roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feet above the ground. Around the main light appeared several smaller lights described as resembling little moons. As the object began to move, it reportedly looked elongated before disappearing rapidly upwards. Those missing details matter. An observer can accurately describe what they saw without being able to determine an object’s distance, true altitude or speed. Because the report does not preserve measured bearings, duration, weather observations or instrument data, investigators cannot reconstruct the geometry of the sighting with confidence.

How glare and distance distort bright lights

The most striking feature of the report is the apparent rapid ascent. However, the human visual system is much less reliable at judging motion when only a bright light is visible against a dark sky than many people realise.

Several ordinary perceptual effects could produce an impression similar to the one described:

  • Unknown distance means unknown speed. A bright light without visible surroundings provides almost no reliable depth cues. A nearby light moving slowly and a distant light moving quickly can produce nearly identical apparent motion.
  • Glare changes apparent shape. Extremely bright point sources often appear larger than they really are because of glare within the eye and atmospheric scattering. If brightness changes suddenly, observers may perceive the light as stretching or elongating.
  • Head and eye movement. When observers track a bright object against an otherwise featureless sky, even slight eye or head movements can create the impression that the object itself has shifted dramatically.

None of these mechanisms proves that this is what happened at Moose Jaw. They simply demonstrate that an apparent vertical launch is not, by itself, reliable evidence of extraordinary flight.

Why the apparent ascent is difficult to verify

The phrase “shot upward” sounds dramatic because it describes perceived motion rather than measured motion.

To establish that an object truly accelerated vertically, investigators would ideally need at least some combination of:

  • two or more observers at different locations;
  • precise compass bearings and elevation angles;
  • timing accurate to the second;
  • photographs or film;
  • radar or other sensor confirmation;
  • reliable estimates of distance.

None of these are publicly available for the Moose Jaw case. As a result, it is impossible to calculate the object’s actual speed or trajectory. An object that genuinely climbed almost vertically and one that simply became dimmer while moving away along another direction can leave remarkably similar eyewitness impressions when viewed as a single bright light.

Could the surrounding lights have been an illusion?

The report also mentions smaller lights around the brilliant central object.

Bright lights commonly produce visual artefacts, including halos, diffraction effects and scattered light within the eye, particularly in low-light conditions. Atmospheric moisture or thin cloud can enhance these effects, creating the impression of multiple neighbouring lights or a luminous envelope around a brighter source.

Equally, the smaller lights could have represented genuine features of whatever the witness observed. The surviving documentation is too brief to distinguish between optical effects, multiple light sources or a structured object.

Because the original report lacks sketches, photographs or detailed follow-up interviews in the public record, this aspect of the sighting remains especially difficult to interpret.

What evidence would confirm rapid ascent?

If an identical report occurred today, investigators would look for evidence that was unavailable—or at least not preserved—from 1967.

Useful corroboration would include:

  • synchronised observations from independent witnesses;
  • radar or other tracking data;
  • astronomical reconstruction to exclude bright planets or stars;
  • aviation records identifying nearby aircraft;
  • weather observations describing visibility and atmospheric conditions;
  • digital photographs or video allowing frame-by-frame analysis.

Without those forms of evidence, claims about exceptional acceleration remain difficult to verify regardless of the witness’s experience or credibility.

A balanced assessment

The Moose Jaw report deserves attention because it originated from military personnel and entered official records rather than remaining an anonymous story. That gives the observation historical significance within Saskatchewan’s record of military and pilot reports.

At the same time, the strongest extraordinary claim—that the light rapidly shot upwards—rests entirely on a single visual observation made before dawn under conditions where distance, altitude and speed were inherently difficult to judge.
