Introduction
Most UFO reports in Alberta are more likely to involve ordinary objects than genuinely unknown craft. Aircraft seen head-on, satellites crossing a dark sky, bright planets near the horizon, meteors, balloons and drones can all look unfamiliar when distance, speed and size are impossible to judge. This is especially true on Alberta’s open roads and rural horizons, where a light may be visible for many kilometres but offer no nearby object against which to estimate its height or movement.

The evidence does not show that every report has a simple answer. It does show that “unidentified” often means that the observation ended before enough information could be collected. Aircraft and aviation lights
Aircraft are among the most convincing sources of mistaken UFO reports because their appearance changes sharply with viewing angle. A passenger jet approaching almost directly towards an observer may seem to remain stationary, while its landing lights appear as one exceptionally bright point. Only when it turns does the observer suddenly see navigation lights, wingtip strobes or the outline of an ordinary aeroplane.
This effect is particularly relevant around Calgary and Edmonton, where commercial traffic, training flights and other aviation activity put many illuminated aircraft over populated areas after dark. A distant aeroplane may be heard late, faintly or not at all, depending on wind, altitude and background noise. Its red, green and white lights may also seem to change colour as the aircraft banks, clouds pass in front of it or atmospheric turbulence distorts the image.
Several familiar aviation situations can therefore produce apparently strange behaviour:
- A bright light that “hovers” and then moves sideways: often an approaching aircraft turning towards or away from an airport.
- Several lights apparently travelling together: possibly an aircraft whose separate landing, navigation and strobe lights cannot yet be recognised as belonging to one airframe.
- A silent dark triangle: sometimes an aircraft seen from below, with three or more lights suggesting a solid shape between them even when the body itself is not visible.
- A light that vanishes suddenly: potentially an aircraft turning, extinguishing landing lights or passing behind thin cloud.
- Erratic movement recorded on a telephone: often camera shake, autofocus changes or digital zoom rather than movement by the distant object.
Transport Canada explicitly warns that the word “UFO” in the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System, or CADORS, is a broad occurrence label. It may refer to drones, balloons, meteors, weather effects or birds and should not be read as evidence of an extraterrestrial vehicle. CADORS entries are initial aviation reports rather than final investigative conclusions, and Transport Canada describes their information as preliminary and subject to change.[Transport Canada]tc.canada.caTransport Canada4. That distinction matters when Alberta pilot or air-traffic reports appear in UFO databases. A pilot’s inability to identify a light is operationally important because an unknown object could present an aviation hazard. It does not follow that the object displayed impossible technology. The proper questions are whether it appeared on radar, whether nearby aircraft or drones were identified, whether it entered controlled airspace and whether independent witnesses recorded the same movement.
Balloons and remotely piloted aircraft add further ambiguity. High-altitude balloons can drift slowly, change apparent direction with different wind layers and reflect sunlight after the ground below has entered twilight. Drones may hover, reverse direction and display lighting patterns that do not resemble conventional aircraft. Satellites, meteors and celestial objects
Satellites have become an increasingly conspicuous part of Alberta’s night sky. A single satellite commonly appears as a steady white point moving in a straight line without flashing navigation lights. It may brighten and then disappear when it enters Earth’s shadow. To an observer unfamiliar with orbital motion, that disappearance can look like sudden acceleration, deliberate dimming or an object “switching off”.
Groups of recently launched satellites can be more striking. Before spreading into their intended orbits, they may appear as a line or procession of evenly spaced lights. The formation can seem artificial because it is artificial, but it is not mysterious: it consists of human-made objects reflecting sunlight. In reporting on increased Canadian sightings during 2020, an astronomer from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada pointed to the growing number of visible satellites and the International Space Station as objects that new sky-watchers often failed to recognise.[Global News]globalnews.caOpen source on globalnews.ca.
Satellites can usually be distinguished from aircraft because they travel smoothly, make no audible sound and do not display repeating red or green navigation lights. They also follow a predictable path. A precise time and location can therefore allow an investigator to compare a report against satellite-tracking data. Meteors and fireballs
Meteors create a different kind of report: sudden, bright and usually brief. An ordinary meteor may last less than a second, while a bright fireball can travel across a large part of the sky, fragment, change colour and leave a glowing or smoky trail. Because it is high in the atmosphere, one event can be reported from widely separated Alberta communities, with witnesses each believing that it passed close to them.
A well-documented example occurred in February 2021, when a brilliant object seen over Alberta and Saskatchewan was identified by University of Alberta researchers as a fragment of a comet burning in the atmosphere. Alberta is particularly useful for meteor research because camera stations can observe large areas of open sky. A Global Fireball Observatory camera at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, for example, recorded a 2021 fireball later studied by Canadian researchers investigating the composition and origin of objects entering from the outer Solar System. Venus, stars and atmospheric distortion
Venus is another persistent source of reports. It can be brighter than any star and is often seen low in the western sky after sunset or in the east before sunrise. With no visible landscape reference, witnesses may interpret it as a hovering light at a relatively modest distance rather than a planet millions of kilometres away.
Its apparent behaviour can become more dramatic near the horizon. Layers of moving air bend and disturb the incoming light, producing flickering, colour changes and small apparent jumps. The observer’s own eye movements can add to the illusion, especially while watching a single light against a dark, featureless background. Bright stars, Jupiter and the Moon can generate similar reports. Thin cloud may make them expand, fade or appear surrounded by a halo. Cloud movement can also create the impression that a stationary object is travelling. When seen from a moving vehicle, nearby trees, poles and hills reinforce a false sense that the distant light is following the observer.
Why Alberta sightings can look more dramatic than they are
Alberta’s geography is well suited both to seeing the sky and to misjudging what is in it. Broad horizons allow aircraft, planets and satellites to remain visible for long periods. At the same time, dark rural surroundings remove the familiar reference points needed to estimate distance. A light one kilometre away and a bright object hundreds or thousands of kilometres away may produce similar images on the retina.
Human vision cannot determine the true size, distance or speed of an isolated light. Witnesses may therefore describe an object as “huge”, “low” or “moving impossibly fast” even though none of those properties was directly measurable. Apparent speed is especially unreliable: a small nearby object moving slowly and a distant object moving rapidly can cross the same angle of sky in the same time.
Telephone video rarely solves the problem by itself. Automatic exposure can turn a point of light into a glowing disc. Digital zoom enlarges blur rather than revealing physical detail. Autofocus may make the object pulse, while image stabilisation and hand movement cause it to wander against an otherwise empty frame. Lens reflections can produce secondary lights that shift when the camera moves. Multiple witnesses improve confidence that something was visible, but they do not automatically establish what it was. Several people standing together share the same viewing angle and may influence one another’s interpretation. A province-wide cluster, by contrast, can be valuable when reports include accurate times and directions: investigators may be able to reconstruct a meteor path, satellite pass or aircraft route.
Why brief sightings are difficult to verify
The central weakness in most Alberta UFO reports is not necessarily the honesty of the witness. It is the lack of information needed to test competing explanations. A statement such as “a white light moved quickly over Calgary” may describe a satellite, aircraft, meteor, drone or reflected light. Without an exact time, viewing direction, duration and angular path, later identification may be impossible.
The 2024 Canadian UFO Survey illustrates the problem nationally. Most reports were simple nocturnal lights, while relatively few were close encounters. Yet the survey classified nearly half of all 2024 reports as having insufficient information. A further 34 per cent received a probable explanation, around 14 per cent were considered explained and about 4 per cent remained unexplained. The federal Sky Canada Project reached a comparable conclusion about the wider Canadian reporting system. It found that cases are scattered among private groups, aviation records, police contacts and other channels, with no single organisation consistently gathering complete observations. A useful sighting record should therefore include:
- the exact local time and date;
- the observer’s location and viewing direction;
- the object’s starting and finishing positions against stars or landmarks;
- total duration;
- whether lights flashed, changed colour or remained steady;

- whether sound was heard, and when;
- original photographs or video rather than compressed social-media copies;
- names and positions of independent witnesses.
These details permit checks against flight-tracking records, airport activity, satellite passes, astronomical charts, meteor-camera data and weather observations. A report that cannot be matched remains unidentified, but its status reflects the limits of the evidence rather than the demonstrated abilities of the object.
What ordinary explanations do—and do not—prove
An ordinary explanation should fit the reported time, direction, duration and behaviour. Merely saying “probably an aeroplane” is not a proper investigation when an aircraft could not have occupied the relevant position. Equally, rejecting an aeroplane or satellite because the witness thought the object was silent, enormous or very close gives too much weight to estimates that are notoriously difficult to make at night.
The strongest explanations are positive identifications: a known flight on the correct approach path, a predicted satellite crossing at the recorded time, a planet fixed in the reported direction or a fireball detected by several cameras. Weaker explanations identify only a general resemblance. They may still be reasonable, but should be labelled as probable rather than certain.
Some Alberta reports will remain unresolved because records are missing, the observation was too short or no photograph preserved useful detail. That residual category is important, but it should not be confused with evidence that ordinary causes have been excluded. The most defensible reading of Alberta’s record is that aircraft, satellites, meteors, balloons and bright celestial objects account for much of what people report, while many of the remaining cases are unresolved principally because the available evidence is too thin to decide.
