Introduction
The flare hypothesis is one of the most plausible conventional explanations for the lights reported off Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, on 4 October 1967. Marine distress flares and military parachute illumination flares can appear as bright orange or yellow lights, descend slowly, flicker in brightness, drift with the wind and seem to hover over water. The missing launch record
The principal weakness of the flare explanation is evidential rather than technical.
