Four Lights Over Moose Jaw: Formation or Illusion?

Introduction
In the early hours of 15 December 1978, several Canadian military personnel at CFB Moose Jaw reported seeing four circular lights travelling from west to east just above the northern horizon. The witnesses described the objects as whitish with orange and light red colouring, flying in line formation. Because the observers included a captain and several other military personnel, the report has often been cited as one of Saskatchewan’s more notable military-linked UFO cases. Rather than pointing clearly towards an extraordinary explanation, the surviving record leaves open several ordinary possibilities. The reported colours, the low elevation above the horizon, the apparent formation, and the lack of supporting radar, photographs or detailed witness interviews all make conventional aviation and atmospheric explanations difficult to rule out.
How the witnesses described the formation
The public record of the incident comes from Canadian government files later preserved in the National Research Council’s collection of “non-meteoric sightings”. The summary is concise. It records that, early on 15 December 1978, an officer and several military personnel at CFB Moose Jaw observed:
- four objects in line;
- circular in appearance;
- whitish with orange and light red colouring;
- slightly above the northern horizon;

That description is notable for what it includes and what it omits. The observers did not report abrupt accelerations, impossible turns, dramatic altitude changes or interaction with the base. There is also no indication in the surviving summary that the lights were tracked by radar, photographed, or investigated with enough detail to reconstruct their exact bearings or speed.
The report therefore documents an unusual visual observation rather than evidence of extraordinary aircraft performance.
Aircraft routes and horizon distortion
The strongest conventional explanations arise directly from the geometry described by the witnesses.
The lights were said to be only slightly above the northern horizon. Objects viewed close to the horizon are among the hardest to judge accurately because observers lose many of the depth cues available when something is overhead. Atmospheric refraction, haze and layers of differing air temperature can alter brightness, apparent colour and even perceived shape.
Aircraft also appear very different when viewed almost directly along their direction of travel. Several aircraft using similar routes can seem to form a neat line even when separated by many kilometres. Bright landing or forward-facing lights dominate the view, while red and white navigation lights may blend into changing colours as the aircraft move through haze.
The colours reported at Moose Jaw—white with orange and light red—fit comfortably within this range of visual effects. White aircraft lights frequently acquire orange or reddish tints when viewed through large volumes of atmosphere near the horizon, particularly during winter conditions over the Prairies.
Formation flying is another possibility, although the surviving record does not provide enough information to establish whether military aircraft were operating in the relevant sector at that time. Without exact timings, bearings and flight records, investigators cannot distinguish between aircraft flying together and unrelated aircraft appearing aligned from the observers’ viewpoint.
Why multiple witnesses did not resolve the sighting
One reason this incident continues to appear in discussions of Saskatchewan UFO history is that several military personnel witnessed the same event. That undoubtedly strengthens the case that something unusual was seen.
However, multiple observers do not automatically identify what was seen.
If everyone views the same distant lights from essentially the same location, they also share the same visual limitations. Every witness may agree about colour, direction and apparent movement while still being unable to estimate the true distance or size of the objects.
Professional military experience can improve observation and reporting, but it does not eliminate well-known perceptual problems associated with:
- distant lights without visible structure;
- unknown viewing distance;
- darkness and limited visual reference points;
- low-angle observations close to the horizon.
The Moose Jaw report illustrates this distinction clearly. The witness group provides confidence that the observation itself was genuine, but not that the lights represented an unknown craft.
Why the case remains unresolved
The case survives because no definitive explanation was recorded, not because compelling evidence for an extraordinary object emerged.
Several important pieces of information are absent from the public record:
- exact observation time beyond the date;
- duration of the sighting;
- angular separation between the lights;
- estimated speed;
- weather and visibility conditions;
- independent radar confirmation;
- photographs or film;
- detailed follow-up interviews.
Without those details, later investigators cannot reliably reconstruct the event or test competing explanations against measurable evidence.

What the Moose Jaw sighting adds to Saskatchewan’s UFO history
Within Saskatchewan’s military-related UFO record, the December 1978 incident occupies an interesting middle ground.
Unlike many anonymous civilian reports, it involved identifiable military personnel at an operational Canadian Forces base. Unlike stronger historical UFO cases elsewhere in Canada, however, it lacks supporting technical evidence that would allow investigators to test the witnesses’ interpretation.
For that reason, the Moose Jaw sighting is best understood as an unresolved visual observation rather than persuasive evidence of unknown technology.
