Introduction

One of the most frequently repeated claims about the 7 November 1990 Hotel Bonaventure sighting is that witnesses observed a craft between roughly 300 and 500 metres across, with some later estimates placing it at around 540 metres wide. That figure, however, was not measured directly. It was calculated by combining estimates of how large the object appeared with assumptions about how high it was above Montreal. Because neither its distance nor its altitude was independently established, the resulting size estimate is highly uncertain. The dramatic size estimates originated mainly from later analysis rather than from any instrument that measured the object’s range. Investigators Richard F. Haines and Bernard Guénette combined witness descriptions with assumptions about the object’s position relative to cloud layers to estimate a possible physical diameter. The crucial point is that the calculation depended on a chain of assumptions. An object’s apparent size in the sky tells us very little about its true size unless its distance is already known. Astronomers, pilots and photographers all face the same geometric limitation: a nearby small object and a distant large object can subtend exactly the same visual angle.

How Witnesses and Investigators Estimated Apparent Width

Witnesses generally described a broad luminous formation rather than a sharply defined outline. To estimate its apparent width, investigators later asked several key witnesses to reconstruct how large the phenomenon had appeared, sometimes by indicating its size at arm’s length.

This approach can provide a rough estimate of apparent angular size, but it has important limitations:

  • the estimates relied on human memory rather than measurements made during the event;
  • witnesses did not all agree on the apparent size;
  • many estimates were collected months after the sighting rather than on the night itself;

Even within the published discussions, reported angular estimates vary substantially. Such variation is not surprising because humans are generally poor at reconstructing visual angles from memory, particularly for unusual events seen at night.

The Missing Altitude and Distance Measurements

The greatest uncertainty concerns range.

No radar measurement established the distance to the luminous phenomenon. Likewise, no laser rangefinder, stereo photography or triangulation from multiple observation points fixed its position in three-dimensional space. Instead, investigators inferred altitude from contextual clues, including cloud observations and reports that an aircraft passed beneath the lights. Those inferences are plausible hypotheses rather than direct measurements. If the assumed altitude changes, the estimated physical size changes with it.

This is why the often-quoted figure of approximately 540 metres should be understood as a model outcome rather than an observed fact.

How Lower Cloud Would Shrink the Calculated Size

The geometry is straightforward. If an object appears to cover the same angle in the sky:

  • doubling its assumed distance doubles its calculated diameter;
  • halving its assumed distance halves its calculated diameter.

Consequently, if the luminous phenomenon was associated with a lower cloud layer rather than one several kilometres above the city, its calculated width would shrink dramatically. A phenomenon only a few hundred metres above the hotel could produce a much smaller physical size while appearing equally impressive to observers below.

Because the Bonaventure event occurred beneath cloudy skies, determining exactly which cloud layer, if any, interacted with the lights is itself uncertain. What This Means for Assessing the Case

The uncertainty over size does not invalidate the sighting itself. However, the evidence supports two different conclusions with different levels of confidence:

  • Well supported: observers witnessed an unusual, long-lasting luminous phenomenon over central Montreal.

Recognising that distinction helps explain why the case remains unresolved. The strongest evidence concerns the presence and persistence of unexplained lights. The claim that those lights marked an immense vehicle depends on geometric assumptions that cannot now be verified from the available evidence.
