Introduction
One of the most convincing features of many reported UFO incidents is the witness’s certainty that a bright object “went down” just behind a nearby tree line, wooded area or field. In Atlantic Canada, including Prince Edward Island, this impression has repeatedly prompted searches for a supposed crash site. Yet, in many cases, the apparent landing point is created by perspective rather than by an object actually descending to the ground.
This illusion is especially important when considering Atlantic fireballs that were later reported as low-flying craft. A brilliant meteor travelling tens of kilometres above the Earth can appear to sink behind local trees even though it is actually hundreds of kilometres away. How the horizon distorts distance
Human vision estimates distance by comparing familiar objects such as buildings, roads and trees. At night, a bright light in an otherwise featureless sky provides almost none of these clues. The brain therefore relies on assumptions that work well for everyday life but fail when viewing astronomical phenomena.
A fireball near the horizon is particularly deceptive because it is being viewed almost sideways through the atmosphere. Although it may appear only a few degrees above a distant tree line, it can still be 50 kilometres or more above the Earth’s surface and hundreds of kilometres from the observer. NASA observations show that bright fireballs commonly remain visible at altitudes far above aircraft before disappearing from view. The dropped-behind-the-trees illusion
The illusion occurs because the eye naturally treats the last visible point of a moving object as its physical endpoint.
Imagine a meteor travelling away from the observer on a shallow angle. As it reaches the horizon, its glowing trail ends. From the witness’s viewpoint, the final flash lines up perfectly with a nearby belt of trees or a low hill. The brain therefore concludes that the object has disappeared behind those trees rather than recognising that it has simply ceased glowing far beyond them.
This is an example of simple line-of-sight geometry rather than unusual atmospheric behaviour. The foreground trees merely block the observer’s view of the distant horizon. They provide no information about how far away the meteor actually is.
The effect becomes even stronger when:

- there are few visible landmarks between the observer and the horizon;
- the observation occurs over water, snow or open farmland;
- the meteor follows a shallow path rather than descending steeply.
These conditions are common along Prince Edward Island’s coastline, where long, unobstructed views across the Gulf of St Lawrence can make distant atmospheric events appear surprisingly close.
Why searches begin in the wrong place
Many dramatic UFO reports begin with an entirely reasonable decision: witnesses go looking for where they believe the object landed.
Once observers are convinced that a fireball vanished behind a particular wood or ridge, they often expect to find:
- scorch marks;
- wreckage;
- an impact crater;
- a damaged tree;
- unusual debris.
In most meteor cases, these searches fail because the object never reached that location. If the meteor completely ablated in the upper atmosphere, nothing reached the ground nearby. Meteor organisations therefore rely on reports from many different observers. Why this matters for Atlantic UFO reports
Within the wider history of UFO reports in Prince Edward Island, the “landed behind the trees” description deserves careful attention because it is common but not diagnostic. By itself, it does not distinguish an unconventional craft from a bright meteor.
Atlantic Canadian reports occasionally describe objects apparently descending into forests, fields or coastal waters. When investigators later compare reports from neighbouring provinces, they sometimes find that observers separated by hundreds of kilometres were describing the same fireball. This perspective is relevant when assessing reports associated with the August 1990 Atlantic sightings, including those discussed elsewhere in the Prince Edward Island UFO record. A witness’s confidence that an object disappeared just beyond nearby trees should not be dismissed, but neither should it be treated as reliable evidence of an actual local landing without independent supporting evidence.
What investigators look for instead
Experienced investigators place greater weight on evidence that is less vulnerable to perspective errors.
Useful indicators include:
- independent reports from multiple locations;
- precise compass bearings and elevation angles;
- photographs or security-camera footage;
- recorded times accurate to the minute;
- radar or astronomical observations where available;
- delayed sonic booms, which can help estimate distance and trajectory.
Conversely, a report based solely on the apparent disappearance of a light behind nearby trees provides little information about the object’s true range.
This distinction helps explain why many apparently dramatic “landing” reports ultimately prove consistent with ordinary fireballs, while a much smaller number remain unresolved because they include additional evidence that cannot be explained by the horizon illusion alone.
