What witnesses reported over Random Island
The sighting began at about 1.45 a.m., after people in Clarenville contacted the local RCMP detachment about an unusual light. Blackwood went to the waterfront, where witnesses directed his attention towards an object over or near the water separating Clarenville from Random Island. Accounts generally describe a bright central or downward-pointing light, smaller coloured lights and an oval, cigar-like or elongated outline with something resembling a fin or curved tail. The exact duration varies between retellings. The Royal Canadian Mint’s account says the phenomenon remained nearby for nearly an hour, while Blackwood has recalled watching it for almost two hours. Blackwood’s account also appears unusually stable in its central elements. In later interviews he continued to describe a silent, brightly illuminated object over the water, an extended observation and an apparent response to his vehicle lights. What the case does not provide
Clarenville produced no accepted physical trace. There is no recovered fragment, landing mark, recorded electromagnetic disturbance or independently verified effect on the surrounding environment. The object was apparently observed at a distance and never reported to have landed. No authenticated photograph or film of the 1978 object has become part of the public case record. This absence is particularly frustrating because the reported duration should theoretically have allowed time to obtain a camera. In practice, photography at about two in the morning in 1978 was much less immediate than it is today: people did not routinely carry cameras, and consumer film equipment performed poorly on distant lights at night. Could Jupiter explain it?
The principal conventional explanation associated with the case is Jupiter. The Royal Canadian Mint’s historical summary states that the National Research Council suggested the planet, with its light reflected or projected on the water, while noting that the witnesses rejected that identification. This proposal should not be caricatured: bright planets viewed near the horizon can appear to flash in several colours because their light passes through more turbulent atmosphere. Jupiter does not neatly explain every element of Blackwood’s account. A planet would not possess a true fin, illuminate the sea with a downward beam, respond intentionally to police lights or suddenly depart upwards. The question is whether those details describe objectively observed behaviour or interpretations created by glare, magnification, cloud movement and uncertain perspective. A bright source can appear to change shape through an imperfectly focused telescope, while thin moving clouds can make it dim, brighten or seem to move.
The duration and silence are compatible with an astronomical source. The claim that the object eventually rose or accelerated away is less so, although a star or planet can disappear rapidly behind cloud or become harder to see as atmospheric conditions change. Conversely, an aircraft or helicopter might account for coloured lights and an apparent structure, but prolonged silence and hovering would be difficult to reconcile with an ordinary nearby aircraft. A distant aircraft seen nearly head-on could appear stationary for a time, yet it would not readily account for an observation lasting well over an hour without supporting aviation records.
Reflections from vessels, shore installations or unusual atmospheric refraction are also possible in principle, particularly across water. None has been tied convincingly to a named ship, light or weather condition present at the exact time. The ordinary explanations therefore remain plausible categories rather than demonstrated solutions.
Why the verdict remains unresolved
Clarenville is strongest where many UFO stories are weakest: multiple people saw something for a prolonged period, and a responding RCMP officer publicly stood by his account. It is weakest where a scientifically persuasive case must be strongest: no recorded imagery, range measurement, radar correlation or physical trace establishes what the observers were looking at. The evidence supports the conclusion that a noteworthy and puzzling light was seen. It does not securely establish its size, altitude or material form.
Later reporting has preserved the story rather than materially strengthened it. Blackwood’s interviews add detail and demonstrate that he remained convinced, but recollections recorded decades afterwards cannot replace contemporary measurements. What endures is a credible report of something the available investigation did not satisfactorily identify—and an equally important absence of the objective data needed to decide what that something was.
