Why laboratory testing found no clear cause

The medical evidence, however, is less tidy. Early police descriptions and photographs taken soon after the incident depict the skin injuries as irregular, patchy or blotchy rather than as a sharply defined checkerboard corresponding exactly to the holes supposedly visible on the craft. Taken on its own, the surviving clothing supports several modest conclusions.

What it does not demonstrate is equally important.
