The officers reported that the light appeared to change position relative to their patrol car, at times seeming to remain ahead of them and at other times moving across the landscape near Sugarloaf. They attempted to keep the object in view by driving to different locations, creating the impression that they were following it for several miles. However, readers should distinguish between the existence of a report and the strength of the evidence within it. Why apparent pursuit can mislead witnesses

A striking feature of the RCMP account is the impression that the light was responding to the patrol car or staying ahead of it. Experiences of this kind are well known in visual perception and do not necessarily require an object to be actively following an observer.

At night, a distant bright light viewed against a largely featureless background can appear to maintain its position while the observer is moving. Without nearby landmarks, people often find it difficult to judge range accurately. A light that is actually many kilometres away may seem to accompany a moving vehicle because its apparent position changes only slowly compared with closer objects.

Several factors could contribute to this effect:

  • the lack of depth cues in darkness;
  • changing road direction altering the viewing angle;
  • hills obscuring and revealing the light;
  • atmospheric conditions affecting brightness and colour;
  • the tendency to interpret changing perspective as movement by the object itself.

How later investigation affected the case

The Campbellton sightings were forwarded through Canada’s reporting system for unusual aerial observations, involving the RCMP and the National Research Council’s Herzzberg Institute of Astrophysics. The existence of multiple archived records shows that officials regarded the reports as worth documenting and circulating, even though no conclusive explanation emerged.
