Why a Bright Light Seems to Follow Your Car

Introduction
A bright light that seems to follow your car is one of the most common experiences behind British Columbia UFO reports that are later given an ordinary explanation. The effect is especially convincing on mountain highways, coastal roads and long rural stretches where there are few nearby landmarks. In many cases the “following” object is not moving at all. Instead, it is a bright planet—most often Venus—remaining almost fixed against the distant background while the driver, the road and the foreground scenery move around it. How foreground motion creates the illusion
The key mechanism is parallax, the difference in how nearby and distant objects appear to move as an observer changes position.
Trees, lamp posts, roadside signs and mountain ridges are relatively close to the driver. As the vehicle moves, these foreground objects slide rapidly across the field of view. A planet, however, is unimaginably farther away. Over the distance covered by a car, its apparent position against the stars changes so little that it appears almost fixed.
To a driver, this creates several misleading impressions:
- The light stays in roughly the same direction even after several kilometres, making it seem to be matching the car’s speed.
- When the road bends, the light appears to swing with the vehicle because the driver is constantly changing direction while looking at the same distant point in the sky.
- As hills, forests or buildings briefly block the view, the light disappears and then reappears, creating the impression that it is deliberately hiding or re-emerging.
- On winding mountain roads, repeated changes in direction can make the light seem to circle the vehicle or repeatedly return after apparently being left behind.
British Columbia’s terrain makes this effect particularly persuasive. Valleys, ridgelines and dense forests continually interrupt the view of the horizon, preventing drivers from judging how far away a bright light really is.
Why Venus is often mistaken for a nearby object
Venus is by far the most frequent astronomical explanation for reports of hovering or pursuing lights.
Several characteristics make it unusually easy to misidentify:
- It is often the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon.
- It is commonly visible shortly after sunset or before sunrise, precisely when many people are commuting.
- It can remain low above the horizon for long periods, making it appear close to distant mountains or treetops.

Civilian investigators at UFO*BC have repeatedly concluded that reports initially described as unexplained lights were most consistent with Venus after comparing the reported time, direction and apparent motion with the planet’s actual position. The same misunderstanding can also occur with Jupiter when it is exceptionally bright, although Venus is generally the more common source of reports because of its greater brightness and its frequent appearance near the horizon.
Why drivers often feel the light is following them
The sensation of being chased is psychologically understandable.
Drivers naturally expect nearby objects to move across the windscreen as they travel. When one bright object stubbornly refuses to shift position, the brain often interprets that as evidence that the object itself must be moving to maintain its place.
This impression becomes even stronger when:
- the road runs roughly towards the planet;
- there are no other stars visible for comparison because of twilight or light pollution;
- the observer cannot estimate the object’s true distance;
- attention remains fixed on the light for several minutes.
Because the object stays almost directly ahead, every turn of the road can reinforce the feeling that it is deliberately tracking the vehicle. The experience is genuine from the witness’s perspective, even though the explanation lies in geometry rather than the motion of the object itself.
What timing and sky position can confirm
Many reports can be evaluated by checking whether a bright planet occupied the reported part of the sky at the stated time.
Useful questions include:
- Was the observation shortly after sunset or before sunrise?
- Was the light low in the western sky during the evening or low in the eastern sky before dawn, where Venus is commonly seen?
- Did it remain visible for tens of minutes with little overall movement?
- Did it disappear only when hidden by hills, trees or buildings?
- Did it continue appearing in roughly the same direction despite the vehicle travelling many kilometres?
If these details match astronomical records, the case becomes much more consistent with a bright planet than with a nearby aircraft or unknown object. Why this matters when assessing British Columbia UFO reports
The “following light” illusion illustrates why distance is one of the hardest things to judge in the night sky. A witness can honestly report that a light seemed to pace their vehicle without the object having moved at all.
This does not mean every report of a following light is automatically explained by Venus. A careful investigation still needs the observation time, viewing direction, weather, road orientation and the object’s reported behaviour. If those details do not match the position of a bright planet, investigators must consider other possibilities such as aircraft, helicopters or other identifiable aerial phenomena.
