The strongest evidence in this aspect of the Falcon Lake case concerns Michalak’s physical condition rather than the explanation he offered for it.

On the afternoon of 20 May 1967, Michalak was encountered by RCMP-related highway patrol personnel while making his way back towards civilisation. The attending officer described him as confused, agitated and appearing unwell. Although the officer initially thought he looked intoxicated, he specifically noted that he could detect no smell of alcohol. After reaching Winnipeg, Michalak received hospital treatment for burns. Contemporary accounts describe first-degree burns across the upper body together with singed hair and damaged clothing. Michalak also complained of nausea, vomiting, headaches and weakness shortly after the incident. Why the burn pattern remains disputed

The feature that attracted the greatest attention was the distinctive pattern on Michalak’s abdomen.

According to his account, the burns were produced when a blast of hot gas or exhaust emerged from a grid-like opening in the side of the object as it lifted off. Photographs taken after the incident showed a regular arrangement of burn marks that many later writers described as matching a vent or grille. Thermal burns, chemical burns and contact with a hot industrial object can all produce patterned injuries under some circumstances. Radiation sickness claims versus the records

One of the most persistent claims about Falcon Lake is that Michalak suffered radiation sickness.

The historical record is considerably more restrained than many popular retellings. Investigators did identify radioactive material associated with parts of the wider investigation, and government agencies examined the possibility that radiation might have been relevant. His symptoms—including nausea and weakness—are sometimes presented as proof of radiation exposure, but they are medically non-specific. Such complaints can accompany heat stress, anxiety, dehydration, infection, chemical exposure and numerous other conditions. Without dosimetry, characteristic blood changes or other diagnostic evidence, those symptoms cannot reliably distinguish radiation injury from more ordinary causes. The later recurring lesions

The case became more complicated when Michalak later reported that similar marks had reappeared on his body.

These recurring lesions have often been cited as evidence that the original injury had unusual long-term effects. Yet the evidential basis is weaker than for the initial burns. The later marks did not arise under the same documented circumstances, and medical opinion was divided over their significance. Some physicians found them difficult to explain, while at least one psychiatric assessment suggested that the later lesions were probably self-inflicted rather than evidence of a continuing physical process. What the injuries actually show

The injuries are both the greatest strength and the greatest limitation of the Falcon Lake case.

They strengthen the case because they demonstrate that something happened to Michalak beyond merely reporting an unusual sighting. Contemporary witnesses, doctors and investigators agreed that he had burns and appeared genuinely unwell. At the same time, the injuries do not identify their own cause.
