Introduction
One of the most common explanations for an apparently hovering UFO is not an exotic object at all, but an ordinary aircraft flying almost directly towards the observer. This optical effect is especially relevant in Alberta, where people frequently watch aircraft against broad, open horizons around Calgary, Edmonton and the province’s major highways. A jet on final approach can seem to remain fixed in one place for many seconds, or even minutes, despite travelling at hundreds of kilometres per hour. Only when it changes heading, banks or passes to one side does its true motion become obvious.
Within Alberta’s wider UFO history, this mechanism matters because it explains a recurring pattern of reports: a brilliant white light that appears stationary, silent or slow-moving before suddenly revealing itself as an aircraft.
How viewing angle hides forward motion
The illusion comes from simple geometry rather than unusual aircraft behaviour.
Human observers judge movement mainly by how quickly an object shifts sideways across their field of view. An aircraft crossing from left to right produces obvious angular motion, making its speed easy to appreciate. An aircraft approaching almost directly, however, changes its position against the background only very slowly. Most of its movement is towards the observer rather than across their line of sight.
As a result:
- the aircraft appears almost fixed in one position;
- its increasing size is difficult to notice because the change is gradual;
- without nearby objects for comparison, distance is hard to estimate;
- the brain can interpret the bright light as hovering rather than approaching.
This effect becomes particularly convincing at night, when the aircraft itself is invisible and only its lights can be seen. The observer has few visual references with which to judge motion or distance.
Around Calgary International Airport and Edmonton International Airport, arriving aircraft often follow long, stable approach paths. Someone several kilometres from the runway may therefore watch an aircraft maintain almost the same apparent position while steadily descending towards the airport.
What landing and navigation lights reveal
The lighting configuration of modern aircraft reinforces the illusion.
Landing lights are extremely bright white lights intended to make an aircraft visible during take-off and landing. Only later does the picture change.
As the aircraft turns slightly or passes the observer:
- the dazzling landing lights no longer point directly towards the viewer;
- the red light on the left wing and green light on the right wing become easier to distinguish;
- white anti-collision strobes become more obvious;
- the outline of the aircraft may suddenly appear.
To someone unfamiliar with aircraft lighting, this transformation can seem dramatic. A single brilliant “hovering” object appears to become an ordinary aeroplane almost instantly, even though nothing unusual has happened beyond a small change in viewing angle.
Why Alberta conditions can make the illusion convincing
Alberta offers several conditions that can strengthen this perception.
Large areas of open prairie provide uninterrupted sightlines extending for many kilometres. Without nearby buildings, trees or hills, there are few visual cues to reveal an aircraft’s true distance or speed.
Night-time observations are especially prone to misinterpretation because:
- aircraft noise may arrive much later than expected, especially if the aircraft is high or the wind carries sound away from the observer;
- cold, stable air can affect how sound travels;
- atmospheric haze and turbulence can make bright lights shimmer or appear larger than they really are;
- isolated lights against a dark sky provide almost no depth perception.

These factors help explain why reports of apparently stationary lights are more common during evening and night observations than in full daylight.
Clues that separate aircraft from unknown objects
A hovering-looking aircraft usually leaves several recognisable clues once it is observed for long enough.
The strongest indicators include:
- Gradual brightening. The light slowly becomes more intense as the aircraft approaches.
- Eventual sideways movement. After remaining almost stationary, the object begins moving laterally as the flight path changes relative to the observer.
- Appearance of coloured lights. Red and green navigation lights become visible once the aircraft is no longer directly head-on.
- Regular flashing. White anti-collision strobes flash at consistent intervals rather than randomly.
- Predictable location. The observation lies beneath established arrival or departure routes serving Calgary, Edmonton or smaller regional airports.
By contrast, an observation that genuinely remains stationary for a prolonged period while displaying behaviour inconsistent with known aircraft would require additional investigation rather than immediate dismissal.
Why this matters for Alberta UFO reports
Many Alberta UFO reports describe a bright light that appears to hover before suddenly moving sideways or revealing itself as an aircraft. That sequence matches the expected appearance of an aircraft on final approach far more closely than it suggests extraordinary flight performance.
Recognising this mechanism does not mean every unidentified aerial sighting has a conventional explanation. Instead, it demonstrates why investigators routinely compare witness reports with local flight paths, airport operations and aircraft lighting before treating a case as genuinely unexplained.
