Introduction

Yellowknife’s airport and the air routes crossing Great Slave Lake give pilots, flight crews and air traffic staff unusually good opportunities to notice unfamiliar lights. The strongest modern example occurred during the night of 29–30 January 2023, when a Canadian North crew approaching Yellowknife reported two white lights apparently moving in circles above and around the airport area. That combination makes the case interesting, but not conclusive. Pilots are trained observers who can describe direction, altitude and apparent movement more precisely than most witnesses. Even so, an isolated night-time observation does not supply reliable distance or speed, and the absence of a radar or traffic-alert return does not prove that nothing conventional was present. The Yellowknife report is best treated as a credible observation that remained unidentified in the available public record, rather than evidence of an extraordinary aircraft.

What the Canadian North crew reported

Canadian North flight 5071, an ATR 42 travelling from Fort McMurray to Yellowknife, was descending towards Runway 34 when its crew asked whether two aircraft were carrying out circuits or manoeuvres near the airport. Air traffic staff replied that no traffic had been reported in the area. The pilots then described two lights “dancing around” above them and said the objects did not appear on the aircraft’s traffic collision avoidance system, known as TCAS. The crew first noticed the lights while descending through roughly 20,000 feet. During the radio exchange, their estimates changed as the aircraft continued towards Yellowknife: the lights were described at different moments as east of the city, above the aircraft, and later perhaps 10 to 20 nautical miles north-west of the airport at about 27,000 feet. That variation is not necessarily suspicious. Estimating the position of an unrecognised light against a dark sky is difficult, especially when both the observer and the possible source are moving. The sighting lasted longer than a momentary meteor. According to the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System entry reproduced by aviation media, the crew continued to see the lights during the approach and down to the ground. The lights were described as white and moving in a circular pattern, with no known traffic nearby. The crew did not report an immediate collision hazard, loss of control or interference with the aircraft. One pilot explicitly told air traffic staff that the lights were not a risk to the flight; the crew mainly wanted to know what they were seeing. Why pilot testimony matters — and where it stops

Professional pilots are valuable witnesses because they routinely judge aircraft lighting, relative motion and traffic patterns. In this case, the crew recognised that the lights did not resemble normal reported traffic and checked the observation with the ground station rather than merely speculating. The radio recording also preserves the report as it developed, reducing the risk that the account was substantially embellished later.

There are nevertheless important limits. Pilots are skilled at interpreting objects whose position and scale are already understood. A point of light without a visible body, known distance or fixed background can defeat the usual cues used to estimate altitude, size and speed. Transport Canada’s own training material warns that night flying creates visual illusions, particularly over water or dark terrain. Those conditions are relevant near Yellowknife. An aircraft approaching over Great Slave Lake may have large areas of darkness below and comparatively few ground references beyond the city and airport lights. The observer’s aircraft is descending, turning and changing perspective at the same time. Under such circumstances, two distant lights following straight or gently curved paths can seem to circle, accelerate or change position relative to one another.

This does not mean the pilots imagined the lights. Autokinesis and related effects concern the interpretation of real visual stimuli, not necessarily hallucinations. The useful distinction is between seeing a light and correctly determining what that light was doing in three-dimensional space.

What aviation records can confirm

The 2023 report entered Canada’s Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System, usually called CADORS. Transport Canada uses this system to collect preliminary information about events involving Canadian aircraft, Canadian airports and Canadian-controlled airspace. It can identify possible safety hazards and help determine whether another body should follow up. A CADORS classification containing “UFO” does not indicate that officials judged a report to be exotic or extraterrestrial. Transport Canada states that the term can cover drones, balloons, meteors, weather phenomena, birds and other objects that were not identified at the time of reporting. Depending on the circumstances, follow-up may involve Transport Canada, NAV CANADA, the Transportation Safety Board, the Department of National Defence or the North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD.[Transport Canada]tc.canada.caTransport Canada4. In the Yellowknife case, the public record confirms several points:

  • a commercial flight crew reported two unexplained white lights;[instagram.com]instagram.comSource details in endnotes.
  • air traffic personnel knew of no matching local traffic;
  • the crew’s TCAS display did not show a corresponding aircraft;
  • ground surveillance did not produce an obvious match during the exchange;
  • a CADORS occurrence and a CIRVIS report were generated;

It does not confirm the lights’ actual altitude, range, size or flight path. No publicly available photograph, cockpit video, weather-balloon track, drone record or detailed radar analysis has been tied to the event. No second aircraft is known to have independently triangulated the lights from a substantially different position. Those missing elements sharply limit what can be concluded.

Why “nothing on radar” is not decisive

The absence of a radar or TCAS return is often treated as the most dramatic part of a pilot UFO report. In practice, it narrows the possibilities but does not settle the case.

TCAS is designed primarily to detect suitably equipped aircraft transmitting transponder information. It is not a general-purpose sensor for every physical object in the sky. A small drone, balloon, distant aircraft with unsuitable or inactive equipment, satellite, meteor or optical effect may produce no TCAS alert. Similarly, air traffic surveillance depends on the available sensor coverage, the object’s equipment, altitude, radar reflectivity and how the local system is configured. A missing return is therefore useful evidence against an ordinary, correctly equipped aircraft operating where the pilots believed the lights to be. It is much weaker evidence against objects whose apparent position was wrong, objects outside normal surveillance coverage, very small targets or lights originating far beyond the atmosphere.

The changing position estimates in the Yellowknife radio exchange make this especially important. If the lights were much farther away than they appeared, searching radar at the crew’s estimated altitude and location would not necessarily reveal their source.

Aircraft, balloons, drones and satellites

No single conventional explanation has been publicly demonstrated for the Yellowknife lights. Several possibilities remain plausible to different degrees.

Unreported or mislocated aircraft. Two aircraft in a holding pattern, military exercise or distant route could appear to circle. The crew initially thought the lights might belong to aircraft carrying out manoeuvres. Against this explanation, air traffic staff reported no known movement, and neither TCAS nor surveillance showed an obvious match. The changing visual estimates nevertheless leave open the possibility that conventional traffic was farther away than assumed.

Balloons. The sighting occurred during the period when a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon was crossing northern North America. Contemporary reporting placed that balloon’s route farther west, and the available timeline does not provide a close match for two lights circling near Yellowknife. Other scientific or recreational balloons cannot be entirely excluded. Large unmanned balloons are regulated in Canada and authorised operations may be coordinated with air traffic control or equipped with radar-reflective material, but an unexpected, foreign, small or poorly tracked balloon might not be immediately recognised. A balloon would also need some secondary reflective or illuminated feature to account for two persistent white lights.[Transport Canada]tc.canada.caTransport Canada4. Drones. Remotely piloted aircraft can carry bright lights and may not appear on ordinary airborne traffic displays. Two drones flying patterns would fit the reported appearance better than a lone balloon. However, the crew believed the lights were thousands of feet above them while the aircraft was still at considerable altitude. If that estimate was even approximately correct, ordinary recreational drones would be a poor explanation. The lack of a known operator, recovered equipment or local corroboration leaves the drone theory possible but unsupported.

Satellites. Satellite reflections have become an increasingly important explanation for pilot reports of apparently circling or “racetrack” lights. Under particular viewing geometry, successive Starlink satellites can brighten in the same part of the sky, fade, and be replaced by another. To an observer in a moving aircraft, the sequence may resemble one or two lights repeating a curved course rather than separate satellites travelling in straight orbits. Detailed reconstruction of a 2022 Pacific pilot case showed that reported anomalous lights could be matched to recently launched Starlink satellites using flight data and orbital information. This mechanism is a strong general candidate for sightings described as distant, high, white lights moving in repeated loops while producing no radar or TCAS return. It cannot simply be declared the solution to the Yellowknife event, however. A firm identification would require the exact observation time, aircraft position and heading, satellite orbital data, viewing direction and preferably photographs or video. No published reconstruction has yet demonstrated that particular satellites occupied the required geometry.

Astronomical or atmospheric lights. Bright planets, stars distorted by atmospheric turbulence, auroral features and reflected light can all look unusual. Yellowknife is well known for auroral activity, but aurora normally appears as diffuse arcs, curtains or moving bands rather than two compact white points. A meteor is also unlikely because the observation persisted through much of the descent. Does Yellowknife Airport make such reports more likely?

Yellowknife is the Northwest Territories’ principal aviation centre and one of the three National Airports System airports in northern Canada. Its traffic includes scheduled passenger services, cargo flights, smaller regional aircraft, government operations and occasional military activity. This makes the airport a natural collection point for unusual-light reports. More pilots are looking, more radio conversations are recorded, and air traffic personnel can immediately check known movements. Reports made there are therefore more likely to leave a formal trace than observations from an isolated road, lake or small community.

The same setting also produces ambiguity. Aircraft may be seen at great distances across open northern airspace. Lights from traffic on different routes can appear close together when viewed head-on. Military movements may not always be obvious to a civilian observer, while satellites and high-altitude objects can be especially conspicuous from a dark cockpit. In winter, long hours of darkness increase observation time and reduce visual reference points.

Yellowknife’s aviation environment therefore improves the quality of reporting without automatically improving the quality of identification. It produces witnesses who are alert to abnormal traffic, but it also places those witnesses in conditions where range and motion are unusually hard to judge.

How strong is the 2023 case?

The case is stronger than an anonymous report of a fleeting light because it involves a commercial crew, real-time radio communication and checks by air traffic staff. The duration of the observation also argues against a simple meteor. There is no evident reason to doubt that the pilots saw two distinct or repeatedly appearing lights.

Its evidential weaknesses are equally important. The observations remained visual. The reported positions were estimates and shifted during the approach. There is no released image, instrument recording or independent triangulation. “No radar contact” excludes only targets that the available surveillance systems could reasonably have detected. The CIRVIS and CADORS filings record that an event was reported; they do not amount to a completed identification investigation.

The fairest classification is credible but unresolved, with several plausible conventional mechanisms. Satellite flares deserve particular attention because they can reproduce the otherwise puzzling combination of repeated apparent motion, high apparent altitude and no air-traffic return. Night-time visual illusion, distant aircraft and untracked objects remain possible. None has been established from the public evidence.

Within the Northwest Territories’ UFO history, the Yellowknife report matters less as a landmark mystery than as an example of the modern aviation evidence problem. Trained witnesses, air traffic recordings and official occurrence systems can establish that something unusual was observed. Without precise geometry, sensor data and rapid follow-up, they may still be unable to establish what produced the lights.
