Introduction

A bright fireball is one of the easiest natural events to mistake for an unidentified flying object. Unlike an ordinary meteor, a fireball can outshine Venus, appear to travel slowly, change colour, fragment into multiple glowing pieces and, in some cases, produce a delayed sonic boom. Because it is actually passing through the upper atmosphere at tens of kilometres above the ground, it can be visible across much of Quebec and neighbouring provinces at the same time. Within Quebec’s UFO history, documented fireballs provide some of the clearest examples of how dramatic but natural events generate reports of mysterious lights. Instrumental observations, witness networks and later analysis frequently show that many apparently separate sightings were different perspectives on a single meteor.

The recorded Montreal fireball of September 2016

The evening of 21 September 2016 provides one of Quebec’s best-documented examples. Shortly before 9:40 pm EDT, a brilliant fireball crossed the sky over southern Quebec. The event also generated hundreds of public reports. The American Meteor Society collected reports not only from Montreal and other parts of Quebec, but also from Ontario, New Brunswick and several north-eastern US states. This illustrates an important point for interpreting UFO reports. Witnesses naturally estimated the object from their own viewpoint. Some believed it passed directly overhead, while others thought it travelled horizontally across the horizon or descended nearby. Without the all-sky camera recording, the same event could easily have entered local folklore simply as an unexplained object seen by hundreds of people.

What the 2013 Montreal–Ottawa reports suggest

A similar pattern appeared in November 2013, when residents across the Montreal and Ottawa region reported an exceptionally bright object crossing the sky. Some witnesses also described hearing a loud boom after the light disappeared.

Although the event was not captured by every available monitoring camera, astronomers concluded that the reports were consistent with a bright fireball. The episode demonstrates an important distinction in UFO investigation. A case can remain incompletely documented without becoming evidence for an extraordinary object. In this instance, the available evidence pointed towards a natural explanation even though every detail of the trajectory could not be reconstructed.

Why height, distance and sound are often misjudged

Fireballs are particularly effective at producing misleading impressions because human observers have few reliable visual references against a dark sky.

Several recurring effects appear in Quebec witness reports:

  • They seem much lower than they are. Most bright fireballs burn up between roughly 20 and 100 kilometres above the Earth’s surface. To an observer, however, they can appear only a short distance beyond nearby buildings or hills.
  • Colour changes suggest artificial lighting. Green, blue, white, orange and red colours are all normal during meteor ablation as different minerals vaporise and atmospheric conditions change.
  • Fragmentation resembles manoeuvring objects. When a meteoroid breaks apart, separate glowing fragments can appear to change direction or fly in formation even though they continue along nearly identical paths.
  • Delayed booms imply something exploded nearby. In reality, the sound simply takes much longer than the light to travel from the meteor’s high-altitude path to observers on the ground.
  • Wide visibility creates multiple narratives. These perception effects explain why witness descriptions alone are rarely enough to determine the true nature of a bright aerial event.

Why one meteor can produce dozens of UFO reports

Large fireballs frequently trigger a burst of reports to police, local media, astronomy organisations and UFO investigators. The reports often differ dramatically:

  • one observer describes a silent craft;
  • another reports a green sphere;
  • another recalls sparks or multiple objects;
  • another believes something crashed nearby.

Rather than indicating multiple phenomena, this diversity usually reflects differences in viewing angle, atmospheric conditions and human perception. Modern meteor networks combine witness reports with camera recordings, timing and trajectory modelling, allowing investigators to determine whether separate accounts belong to a single event. What these cases mean for Quebec’s UFO history

Fireballs do not explain every unusual light reported over Quebec. Some historical cases lack sufficient information for a confident identification, while others involve circumstances that cannot be assessed because key evidence is missing.

However, the Montreal examples show why investigators place considerable weight on astronomical explanations before considering more unusual possibilities. A single bright meteor can produce widespread reports of low altitude, structured craft, changing colours, sudden disappearance and even apparent explosions—all features that frequently appear in UFO accounts.
