Introduction

The Sheffield sighting is one of the better-documented New Brunswick reports preserved in Canada’s official UFO files from the 1978–79 period, but it is also one of the cases where an ordinary astronomical explanation appears stronger than an extraordinary one. According to the surviving records, six people near Sheffield watched a bright, silent, star-like object for around three hours before sunrise on 20 January 1979. The observation was sufficiently unusual for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to record it and forward it through the federal reporting system, yet the reported duration, apparent lack of sound and slow apparent movement all fit the behaviour of a bright planet or star viewed under winter pre-dawn conditions. The three-hour Sheffield observation

The Sheffield incident occurred on 20 January 1979 in Sunbury County, New Brunswick, during the same period that produced several other reports now preserved in Canada’s official UFO archives. The witnesses reportedly included six observers who watched a single bright object before dawn for approximately three hours. The object was described as silent and intensely bright, appearing more like a brilliant star than a structured aircraft. Unlike many short-lived UFO reports, nothing in the surviving summaries suggests rapid acceleration, abrupt manoeuvres, close approach or physical effects on the surroundings. Instead, the observation persisted over an extended period while the object appeared to change only slowly.

That unusually long viewing time is one of the most important clues in the case. A genuine nearby aircraft would normally pass from view within minutes, while a meteor or re-entering spacecraft would disappear in seconds. By contrast, a bright astronomical object remains visible for hours and appears to drift gradually because of Earth’s rotation.

Why binoculars may have distorted the light

One detail associated with the Sheffield report is the use of binoculars. Although binoculars can reveal on the Moon or planets, they can also make bright point sources appear stranger than they really are when atmospheric conditions are poor.

Several optical effects are relevant:

  • Atmospheric turbulence causes a bright planet or star near the horizon to shimmer, pulse and change apparent shape.
  • Chromatic effects can produce flashes of red, blue or green as light passes through thick layers of atmosphere.
  • Slight hand movement while using binoculars exaggerates apparent motion, making a fixed object seem to drift or wobble.
  • Out-of-focus viewing can enlarge a bright point into a glowing disc or irregular blob that appears unlike an ordinary star.

These effects are well known to astronomers and often explain why different observers give different descriptions of the same bright celestial object. They do not imply that the witnesses imagined the object; rather, they help explain why a genuine astronomical target can appear unusual, especially during prolonged observation.

Why an astronomical explanation fits the evidence

Taken together, the reported characteristics are more consistent with a bright planet than with an unidentified aircraft or extraordinary vehicle.

The strongest indicators include:

  • A viewing period of roughly three hours, which closely matches the behaviour of a bright celestial object before sunrise.
  • No reported sound, despite the lengthy observation.
  • Slow apparent movement, consistent with the gradual motion of the night sky rather than powered flight.
  • Persistent brightness, without evidence of rapid changes in position or speed.

Bright planets, particularly Venus when favourably placed, have historically generated many UFO reports because they can dominate the pre-dawn or evening sky. Even when Venus was not the specific object visible on a given date, other bright planets or first-magnitude stars have produced similar reports. Importantly, saying that an astronomical explanation is plausible is not the same as claiming absolute certainty. The surviving official records do not appear to contain a complete astronomical reconstruction made at the time.

What missing direction data prevents us knowing

The main obstacle to a definitive identification is the limited information preserved in the official files.

Critical details that are either absent or unavailable in surviving summaries include:

  • the exact compass bearing;
  • the object’s elevation above the horizon;
  • whether it remained fixed relative to landmarks;
  • precise start and end times;
  • detailed weather and visibility conditions; and
  • a systematic astronomical comparison carried out immediately after the report.

Without those measurements, modern researchers cannot confidently determine which celestial object was being observed at every stage of the three-hour watch. If the original file had included accurate bearings and times, astronomical software could now reconstruct the sky for Sheffield on the morning of 20 January 1979 with considerable precision.

This lack of observational geometry is typical of many historical Canadian UFO files. The reports often preserve sincere witness testimony but omit the technical information needed for a conclusive reconstruction.

Why the Sheffield case still matters

Within New Brunswick’s official 1978–79 UFO records, the Sheffield report is valuable precisely because it demonstrates how an unusual experience can have a convincing conventional explanation without diminishing the witnesses’ credibility.

The six observers appear to have reported what they genuinely believed they had seen, and the RCMP treated the account seriously enough to forward it into the federal system. At the same time, the combination of a silent, brilliant object remaining visible for around three hours before sunrise strongly favours an astronomical source over an unidentified craft.
