Introduction
Bright fireballs are among the most dramatic sights in British Columbia’s night sky, and they regularly generate reports from people convinced they have just seen an aircraft crash into a nearby mountain, forest or lake. In reality, the opposite is usually true. A large meteor burns up tens of kilometres above the Earth, yet the human brain interprets it as a much lower, nearer object because the night sky provides very few reliable depth cues. This impression is understandable but misleading. Witnesses in British Columbia have described fireballs as vivid green, blue, orange or white. Witnesses sometimes interpret these twisting shapes as hovering objects or smoke from a crash site, although they are simply illuminated gases left behind in the meteor’s wake.
Why Reports from Distant Communities Matter
One of the most valuable clues in evaluating these events is not a single eyewitness account but many independent reports.
When observers from Victoria, Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Kamloops or the Interior all describe a brilliant fireball within the same minute, investigators gain something impossible from one report alone: triangulation. Differences in viewing angle allow astronomers to estimate the object’s altitude, direction and approximate flight path.
